There are, however, a number of options for those who would like to use free resources and are willing to develop their understandings of such tools as wikis to use these with their students. Moreover, students can use these to carry out their own research.
Google Docs
Google Docs does many interesting things, among which is the forms tool for creating quizzes and surveys. Proprofs seems more efficient for quizzes, but Google Docs is a powerful tool in its own right.
For classes, the Google Docs quiz can be very useful if you have surveys that have both measurable data and open-ended responses. Once the survey is complete, the survey can be exported to Excel where you can do what you need with it. You will see that all the reponses in the survey are worded, but this can be easily converted to numerical information with some tips on how to use Excel.
Note: if you want the identity of the people taking the survey, make sure the first question asks for the student's name. You can then ask for House, class and teacher information if this is relevant.
The Proprofs quiz tool is better than Google for the purposes of scoring tests and provides graphs for students and for questions. Students can do quizzes more than once, which means that you can see if they have learned the information but it doesn't mean that they can cheat by simply redoing the test and getting a higher score. The final data grid provides the times when the tests were taken.
Also, you can set time limits on quizzes and the IP address of each student is recorded, which means that little Johnny can't call up Billy and get him to take his quiz for him.
This tool has wide-ranging potential both for formative assessments and for simple homework quizzes. It can be used to ensure that students do required reading with a series of simply multiple choice or simple response questions.
At Mazenod College, the Mathletics suite offers this tool anyway, but other learning areas could realise a lot of potential from this.
Quizzes can be embedded in web-pages and wikis (as on this page) or students can be given the quiz url to take the test online either at school or at home.
